چکیده

A simplified method is presented for the determination of butanol-extractable iodine (BEI). The results compare favorably with the original method as described by Man et al. Also available, as part of the procedure for BEI, is a direct chemical determination for butanol-insoluble iodine (Bli) from the same specimen of serum. Heretofore, nonbutanol-extractable iodine has been studied only by means of radioactivity. This fraction merits further investigation.

Butanol-extractable iodine in human and bovine colostrum and milk.

High total iodine content and significant amounts of iodinated amino acids, but not of thyronines, have been reported in milk of various species. Since the human neonate requires thyroxine-like iodine compounds for central nervous system development, analyses of thyroxine-like iodine compounds such as butanol-extractable iodine of colostrum or early milk were indicated. Four samples of human mi...

THE CONCENTRATION AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BUTANOL- EXTRACTABLE I'll OF SERUM IN PATIENTS WITH DIVERSE STATES OF THYROIDAL FUNCTION

Thyroxine, if not truly the active thyroid hormone ( 1, 2) is clearly the principal iodine-containing compound released by the thyroid gland, and ordinarily comprises the largest fraction of the plasma's protein-bound iodine (3-6). Many investigators have, therefore, attempted to assess thyroidal function by measuring the concentration of protein-bound I'll (PB1181) in the plasma following the ...

The effect of oral iodide on serum butanol-insoluble protein-bound iodine in various species.

It is possible that there is an association between the butanol-insoluble protein-bound iodine developed in plasma when potassium iodide is fed and the reduction of serum and hepatic cholesterol. This fraction constitutes most of the protein-bound iodine increase observed in iodide-fed rabbits, dogs, rats and hypertensive human beings. It appears a few days after iodide feeding is begun and dis...

Protein-bound Iodine, Total Iodine, and Butanol-extractable Iodine by Partial Automation.

0 VER the past several years, the measurement of protein-bound iodine (PBT) and butanol-extractable iodine (BET) has become quite popular in evaluating thyroid function. So great has the demand been for these determinations that some laboratories are performing hundreds of the assays per day. In view of these facts, it becomes obvious that automation should be utilized as much as possible to of...
